Surface finishes and coatings for printed circuit boards

Surface finishes and coatings determine the function, solderability and long-term reliability of printed circuit boards. They secure electrical contacts, protect conductor tracks and enable stable processes in assembly and operation.

At Storz, surface finishes, protective coatings and via technologies are always considered in relation to feasibility, layout and material.

Solderable surface finishes for PCBs (ENIG, HAL, immersion tin)

Solderable surface finishes ensure the electrical contact capability of printed circuit boards and have a significant influence on the quality of solder joints. Different processes are used depending on the assembly method, operating conditions and service-life requirements.

Common solderable surface finishes include:

  • ENIG (electroless nickel immersion gold)
  • Lead-free HAL
  • Immersion tin

The suitable solderable surface finish is selected on a project-specific basis and aligned with layout, production and application.

Solder mask, protective coating and legend print

Solder masks and protective coatings protect and define functional areas on the printed circuit board. They prevent short circuits, increase process reliability and contribute to essential functionality.

The legend print supports identification, traceability and assembly. Colour, material and layer thickness are implemented according to customer specifications.

Via technologies for printed circuit boards

Via technologies are a central component of modern multilayer and HDI printed circuit boards. They influence electrical properties, thermal behaviour and the reliability of complex circuit structures.

Depending on the application and design, we realise different via finishes in accordance with IPC-4761, including:

  • Plugged Via (IPC-4761 Type III-a)
  • Filled and covered Via (IPC-4761 Type VI-b)
  • Filled and capped Via (IPC-4761 Type VII)

The suitable via technology is selected in close coordination with development and layout to ensure electrical function and suitability for series production. This is based on clearly defined, documented inspection procedures that enable reliable assessment and reproducible quality.
